Student Employment Initiative
The Student Employment Initiative Wage Subsidy Program (SEI) is an employment and experiential program designed to assist and support Saint Mary's University students with disabilities to secure employment and volunteer experiences. SEI works closely with employers to help them understand the benefits of hiring diverse candidates and offers assistance in creating a supportive and equitable workplace for students with disabilities. Employers receive a 50% wage subsidy for a candidate hired through the SEI program. This collaborative initiative is supported by two Saint Mary's University departments, Career & Experiential Learning and the Fred Smithers Centre of Support for Students with Disabilities. As a joint effort, students and employers receive professional career guidance and expert advice on accessibility standards and best practices in the workplace.
Students in the SEI program come from all academic disciplines and have varying volunteer and workplace experiences. Each student works one on one with staff in Career and Experiential Learning to plan and prepare for their career readiness during and after their studies. Through career counselling, job search development, and employer connectivity opportunities, SEI students are ready to contribute meaningfully to any workplace through already developed professional skills and core competencies.
Career & Experiential Learning and the Fred Smithers Centre of Support for Students with Disabilities recognizes that intentionality around hiring a diverse workforce can be a challenge for many employers. Working with SEI staff, employers can plan, prepare and be confident in their ability to offer an open and welcoming work environment for students with disabilities. As one of the leading university centres of support for students with disabilities in Atlantic Canada over the last 40 years, the Saint Mary’s University Fred Smithers Centre helps hundreds of students with disabilities not only achieve their academic goals but recognize and embrace the strengths they bring to the workplace.

Le programme de subvention salariale de l'Initiative pour l'emploi étudiant (SEI) est un programme d'emploi et d'expérience conçu pour aider et soutenir les étudiants handicapés de l'Université Saint Mary's à trouver un emploi et des expériences de bénévolat.
