Mentorship
Workplace training is linked to employee satisfaction and increased employee retention. As a great deal of a new worker’s orientation and knowledge happens through social learning. Assigning specific mentors to new employees can be a valuable training approach.Workplace Safety
Employers are required to demonstrate due diligence and are responsible for their employees’ safety and security. If there are concerns about employee safety, employers should review safety standards and procedures.Workplace issue: Some employees do not seem to understand how to use equipment safely.
Solution: Confirm that the employees have received proper training and that they understand health and safety rules.
The employer or supervisor should:
- Review workers' training. All training should be documented and periodically reassessed to ensure skills maintenance.
Tip for success: A training matrix or training plans for each position will boost workers’ motivation to increase their skills. - Ensure that workers understand vital information pertaining to the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
Tip for success: WHMIS posters should be readily available for all employees to see. - Seek service provider support. Upon request, service providers can provide support for workers with disabilities.
Tip for success: Qualified job coaches can provide additional workplace training free of charge. - Some workers may require accommodations for training in alternative formats, such as braille, audio, a scribe to complete written tests, etc. These accommodations are reasonable and ensure that employees with disabilities are properly trained for the work environment.
- Performance improvement plans can be very helpful in establishing clarity around workplace expectations and helping any employee to succeed at work.
